The general impression among most Indians is that the nation couldn’t contribute significantly towards science during the 19th/20th century. However, a quick look into true history shows that India had contributed immensely to science, and one such brilliant inventor who played a significant role was Shankar Abaji Bhisey, who was actually hailed worldwide as “India’s Edison”.
Born & brought up in an Orthodox Hindu family at Bombay during British rule in mid 19th century, Bhisey had surprisingly shown excellent grasping capabilities right from his childhood days, when he used to spend most of his time at public libraries and read science magazines for atleast 3 hours a day! The turning point in his life was in the 1890s, when Bhisey attended a science seminar where he heard an Englishman on stage claiming that Indians are incapable of any scientific inventions!
That was the moment when the staunch nationalist Bhisey felt deeply offended and hence embarked on a long journey of scientific exploration, which led to creation of his own lab where he started churning out more than 200 inventions (with 50+ patents), including some of the most legendary inventions like sliding door, railway announcement system, grocery weighing machine, electric bicycle, tamper-proof system for bottles, printing press typecaster, automatic advertising billboards, and many more products/gadgets which are still in use even today!
Surprisingly, the Indian media under British imperials had tried very hard to suppress his legacy, due to which his name was literally unknown in his own nation. Even after independence, in a bid to suppress any nationalist pride, our leftist media has always ignored highlighting his contributions, and ensured that Bhisey remains a forgotten name. Probably it is high time we use alternate platforms to spread awareness about Bhisey, and invoke nationalist pride among future generations!
