ପୁରୀ ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ନଦୀ ଅବବାହିକାରେ ଅବସ୍ଥିତ । ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ନଦୀରୁ ବାମ ପାଖରେ ଗୋଟିଏ ଧାର ବେଳତାଳ (ଦାସଗୋବା) ଗାଁରୁ ବାହାରିଛି । ଏହି ଧାରକୁ ଧାଉଁରିଆ ନଦୀ କହନ୍ତି । କେହି କେହି କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ କହନ୍ତି । ଏହାର ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ମୁଣ୍ଡ ଚନ୍ଦନପୁରରୁ ଓ ଶେଷ ମୁଣ୍ଡ ମାଳତୀପାଟପୁର । ଏହାର ଲମ୍ବ ପାଖାପାଖି ୩ କିଲୋମିଟର । ଏହି କାଞ୍ଚି ବା ଧାଉଁରିଆ ନଦୀ ୩ କିଲୋମିଟର ଗଲାପରେ ଏହାର ବାମପାଖରୁ କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ ବାହାରିଛି । ଧାଉଁରିଆ ନଦୀ ଭାର୍ଗବୀରୁ ବାହାରି ସମାଙ୍ଗ ପାଟରେ ପଡିଛି । ଏହାର ମୁଖ୍ୟ ଜଳସ୍ରୋତ ହେଉଛି କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ । ସମାଙ୍ଗପାଟ ସରପାଟଠାରୁ ଆୟତନରେ କମ୍ । ସର ପାଟ ବିସ୍ତ୍ରୁତ ଅଞ୍ଚଳ । ଏଥିରେ ଅଛୁତପୁର କାଜ୍ ପାଣି ପ୍ରବେଶ କରେ ପୁରୀ ମନ୍ଦିର ତିଆରି ହେଲା ବେଳେ ପଥରସବୁ ଦୟାନଦୀ କୂଳ ଡେଲାଙ୍ଗ ଅରାଗଡା (ଐରଗଡ) ବା ଜଗଦଳପୁର ବିଶ୍ଵନାଥପାହଡରୁ ଭାର୍ଗବୀନଦୀ ଓ ଧାଉଁରିଆ ନଦୀ ଦେଇ ସରପାଟ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଯାଇ ମୂଷା ନଈ ହୁଳୁହୁଳିଆ ଘାଟରୁ ପଥରମାନ ଖେଟଭରଟରେ ଆଣି ସଙ୍ଗୀ ଭରଟରେ ମନ୍ଦିର ନିର୍ମାଣସ୍ଥଳକୁ ନେଉଥିଲେ । ଘାଟରେ ପଥର ପହଞ୍ଚୁଥିଲା ସେଠାରୁ ହାତୀଦ୍ଵାରା ମନ୍ଦିର ପାଖକୁ ନିଆ ଯାଉଥିଲା । ଏହା ଥିଲା ସେତେବେଳର ନୌପରିବହନ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା । ଏହି ହୁଳୁହୁଳିଆଘାଟ ବିଷୟରେ ମାଦଳାପାଞ୍ଜିରେ ଲେଖା ଅଛି – “ ଚୁଡଙ୍ଗଦେବ ପୁରୁଷୋତ୍ତମଦେବଙ୍କ ପ୍ରସାଦ ନିର୍ମାଣକୁ ଆରମ୍ଭ କରିବା ପୂର୍ବରୁ ଗଢେଶ୍ଵର ଦେବଙ୍କ ପ୍ରସାଦ ନିର୍ମାଣ କଲେ । ସେ ଜଗଦଳପୁର ଐରଗଡରୁ ପାଷାଣମାନ ଦୟାନଦୀରୁ ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ନଦୀ ଦେଇ ହୁଳୁହୁଳିଆଘାଟ ବାଟେ ଅଣାଇ କ୍ଷେତ୍ରରେ ପଥରସବୁ ଉତ୍ତାରିବାକୁ ଚୁଡଙ୍ଗହ୍ରଦ ଖୋଳାଇଲେ। ପଥରମାନ ସଙ୍ଗୀ ଭରଟରେ ଆଣି ପୁରୁଷୋତ୍ତମଙ୍କ ଦେଉଳ ଆକାଶ ପ୍ରମାଣେ କରିବାକୁ ଜଗଦଳପୁର ଐରଗଡ ପର୍ବତୁ ପାଷାଣମାନ ଖେଟଭରତଟରେ ହୁଳୁହୁଳିଆ ଅଣାଇ ସଙ୍ଗୀ ଭରଟକୁ ଚୁଡଙ୍ଗପୁର ଖୋଳାଇ ପଥରମାନ ପ୍ରସାଦକୁ ଲଗାଇ ପୁରୁଷୋତ୍ତମଙ୍କ ପ୍ରସାଦ କରି ପରମେଶ୍ଵରଙ୍କୁ ବିଜେ କରାଇ କୋଟି ଦୀପ ଦାନ କରିଥିଲେ ।“

ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ନଦୀରୁ ବାହାରିଥିବା ନଦୀକୁ କେହି କେହି କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ କହନ୍ତି ଆଉ କେହି କେହି ଧାଉଁରିଆ ନଦୀ କହନ୍ତି । କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ ସର ହ୍ରଦ/ପାଟରେ ପଡିଛି । ଏହି ପାଟର ଆୟତନ ସମାଙ୍ଗ ପାଟଠାରୁ ଆୟତନରେ ବଡ । ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ଓ କାଞ୍ଚିନଦୀରେ ବେଶୀ ପାଣି ଆସିଲେ ବାଲିଘାଟ ପାଖରେ ୧୯୩୨ ମସିହାରେ ଗୋଟିଏ କଟ୍ (cut ) ଖୋଲା ଯାଇ ପାଣି ସମୁଦ୍ରକୁ ଛଡା ଯାଉଥିଲା । କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ ଏହିଠାରେ ନୂଆ ନଈ ନାମରେ ସମୁଦ୍ରରେ ପଡିଛି । ଏହି କଟ୍ (cut )କୁ ନୂଆନଈ କହନ୍ତି । କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀର ବୀରହରେକୃଷ୍ଣପୁରଠାରୁ ଗୋଟେ ଧାର ବାହାରିଛି । ଆଉ ମଧ୍ୟ କିଛି ଡ୍ରେନ/ନଳା ସେଥିରୁ ବାହାରି ପୁରୀ ପାର୍ଶ୍ଵବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ଅଞ୍ଚଳ ଦେଇ ପୁଣି ସମାଙ୍ଗ ପାଟରୁ ବାହାରି ଥିବା ସୁନାମୁହିଁ ନଦୀ ସହିତ ମିଶି ଚିଲିକାରେ ପଡିଛି । ସରରୁ ବାହାରି ଥିବା ନଦୀକୁ ମୂଷା ନଈ, ମିଟିଆଣୀ ଜୋର ବା ମଧୁପୁର ନଈ କହନ୍ତି । ସର ପାଟରେ ଯେଉଁ କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ ପଡିଛି, ସେ ତାର ଅସ୍ତିତ୍ଵ ହରାଇ ସେଥିରୁ ମୂଷା ନଈ ଅଠର ନଳା ପାଖରେ ଏହାକୁ ମଧୁପୁର ନଦୀ କହନ୍ତି । ଏହି ନଦୀ କୁମ୍ଭାରପଡା ଦେଇ ମଙ୍ଗଳାଘାଟ ଲୋକନାଥଘାଟ ଦେଇ ଚିଲିକାରେ ପଡିଛି । ଲୋକନାଥ ଘାଟ ପରେ ଗୋଟିଏ କଟ୍ ଖୋଳା ଯାଇଛି । ଏହାକୁ ସମାଙ୍ଗ କଟ୍ କହନ୍ତି । ଏହା କାଜୁ ଜଙ୍ଗଲ ଭିତର ଦେଇ ଯାଇଛି ।

କାଞ୍ଚି ନଈ ସର ହ୍ରଦରେ ପଡି ବର୍ଷା ଦିନେ ବେଶୀ ପାଣି ହେଲେ ଏହା ମଧୁପୁର ନଦୀ ବା ମଙ୍ଗଳା ନଦୀ ବା ସୁନାମୁହିଁ ନଦୀ ଦେଇ ଚିଲିକାକୁ ଯାଏ । ଅନ୍ୟ ଦିନେ ସର ହ୍ରଦ ଜଳ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ହେଲେ, ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ପତ୍ତନ କମ୍ ଥିଲେ, ସରହ୍ରଦରୁ ପଣି ପୁଣି ଭାର୍ଗବୀ ନଦୀକୁ ଫେରି ଆସେ । ବର୍ଷା ଦିନେ କାଞ୍ଚି ନଦୀ ଦେଇ ବାଲିଘାଟ, ବାଙ୍କୀ ମୁହାଣ, ମଧୁପୁର, ମଙ୍ଗଳା ନଦୀ ଦେଇ ପାଣି ଚିଲିକାକୁ ଯାଏ, କିନ୍ତୁ ଅନ୍ୟ ଦିନେ ସର ପାଣି ଭାର୍ଗବୀକୁ ଯାଏ । ଆଉ ଏହି ମଙ୍ଗଳା ନଦୀରୁ ଏକ ଧାର ବାହାରି କିଛି ବାଟ ପରେ ଦୁଇ ଧାରରେ ବିଭକ୍ତ ହୋଇଥିଲା । ଗୋଟିଏ ମାଳିନୀ ଓ ଅନ୍ୟଟି ଶରଧା । ଏହି ଦୁଇ ନଦୀ ବାଙ୍କି ମୁହାଁଣରେ ପଡିଥିଲେ । ଏବେ ଏହାକୁ ବଡ ଶଙ୍ଖ ଓ ସାନ ଶଙ୍ଖ ବୋଲି କହୁଛନ୍ତି । ଏ ସବୁ ଅଞ୍ଚଳକୁ ଶରଧା ବାଲି କହନ୍ତି । ଏବେ ଘର ଦ୍ଵାରା ହେବାରୁ ଏହାର ଅସ୍ତିତ୍ଵ ନାହିଁ । ଫ୍ଲଡ ଆଡଭାଇଜରୀ କମିଟି ରିପୋର୍ଟରେ ଯାହା ଲେଖା ଅଛି ତଳେ ଦିଆଗଲା –

Bhargabi river – The Bhargovi river which forms the west boundary of the area takes off from the Kuakhai river and passes south to within about 5 miles of Puri town after which it proceeds west and finally north-west to the Chilika lake. This river is double embanked throughout and does not contribute flood to the area under report except through Achutpur escape on its left bank about 5 miles from the head, and by the Kanchi river which takes off near the river bend north of Puri and flows into the Sar Lake and Samang Pat. The Bhargovi has a wide sandy bed near its head but lower down gradually assumes a narrower trough-like formation. As the tidal range in the north shore of the Chilika Lake is very small the Bhargovi cannot be considered as tidal.

Kanchi river – The Kanchi river takes off from the Bhargovi about 29 miles or 50 Km. from the head of the Bhargovi and at an acute reverse angle to the Bhargobi. About 1 ½ miles or 2.5 Km. from its head the Dhanuria river takes off from the Kanchi passing in a south west direction into the Samang Pat which is a large low laying seasonally flooded area measuring about 3 miles by 2 miles lying north of Puri town. The Kanchi river flows into the Sar Lake and is double embanked to within about 2 miles of its low flood outfall into the Sar Lake. The river is a deep and narrow trough which deteriorates in section after the Dhauria takes off and is much reduced after entering the open lands bordering the Sar Lake. This river carries flood water from the Bhargovi to the Sar Lake but later in the season when the Sar lake is at a high flood level and the Bhargovi river falls, the current is reversed and Sar Lake water passes back slowly to the Bhargovi .

Atharnalla – As previously described, the Dhauria river coming from the Kanchi river fills the Samang pat with flood water, most of this flood water passes of to the Chilika mouth by the Sunamuhin iriver flowing west, but the Atharnalla is a shallow drainage which connects the Samang Pat on the west with the Sar Lake on the east and flows in either direction according to the respective flood heights of the two lakes. It is a definite channel from the Samang Pat as far as 1 ½ miles east of the railway line, then gets lost in the flood exposed fields bordering the Sar Lake. It is bridged by the Jagannath road and the Bengal Nagpur Railway just north of Puri.

Sar Lake sea Cut – This is an artificial cut from the Sar Lake at Beldal through the casuarinas plantation and high coastal sand dunce to the sea. It was made for flood relief purposes in 1932 and is 400 feet wide. It only works during flood time and thereafter the mouth is closed by a sand bar. It is developing gradually as it is exposed to the scour of floods and during its working period is tidal to within ¾ mile of the Sar Lake.
